Development of the University
GRIGOL ROBAKIDZE UNIVERSITY was founded the year after the act concerning the establishment of private, higher educational institutions was introduced.
The founders of the University spent a whole year studying the higher educational systems and pedagogical technologies of the civilized countries of the world. This gave them a firm basis to form a western model of leaning and teaching which conditioned the future success of the University.
The University carried out marketing research very thoroughly, in order to detect what other, new specialities needed to be established.
Today Grigol Robakidze University is one of the famous and prestigious universities. Its reputation is determined first of all by its rich teaching resource - material-technical base which is still unique and has no equal in Georgia, also by those newest teaching and learning technologies, which fully match with the European standards.
About 150 professors and lecturers work at the University. Over 800 students study happily and successfully. Many American, English and German specialists deliver lectures and carry out research together with students. Every year students participate in scientific conferences, TV journalist students make presentations, win in Georgian and international festivals, etc.
The achieved success of the University is confirmed by the fact that according to the research of the UNESCO International Institute of Education Planning (June 2002) demand on the specialists prepared by Grigol Robakidze University on the labour market reached 86 percent and with this index it appeared among the top five educational institutions.
The involvement of Grigol Robakidze University in the Tempus TACIS Project, besides other projects,
should be considered as of great importance, which has enabled the University to standards of teaching and learning in a very short time. For the first time in Georgia the European credit
transfer system (ECTS), interactive educational technologies, the system of teachers' permanent
development and the academic quality assurance system were implemented within this University. Academic programmes using modules were made up namely here for the first time in Georgia. (It is remarkable that the this system was introduced into the higher educational sphere according to the new legislation only in 2005). Nottingham Trent University (United Kingdom) and Lund University (Sweden) were the partners of Grigol Robakidze University within the sphere of this project.
Successful development of the project laid the foundation for deepening the international relations of Grigol Robakidze University. In 2002 Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between Nottingham Trent University and Grigol Robakidze University, which became the source of students' exchange programme. The coordinator of this memorandum from the Georgian side is Professor Manana Rusieshvili and from Nottingham Trent University Professor Trevor Cartledge who at the same time is the Honorary Professor of Grigol Robakidze University.
Grigol Robakidze University highly appreciates the partnership with Nottingham Trent University and Lund University and expresses its gratitude towards Mr. Colin Love - Director of the project, the coordinator Professor Manana Rusieshvli, and the members of the project: Dr. Trevor Cartledge, Ms. Jackie Stephens, Mr. Jan Hellberg.
The estimations made by the President Mr. Michael Saakashvili, the US President Mr. George Bush, his wife Mrs. Laura Bush, and the Secretary of States Ms Condoleezza Rice about the activities of the University must be considered as a historical event. It is not only an honour for Grigol Robakidze University, its academic personnel and students, but also a great responsibility and stimulus for their future activities.
