In 2000, Grigol Robakidze University established contacts with the Center for International Development at Harvard University, the Head of which is Professor Jeffrey Sachs. He considered the proposal of Grigol Robakidze University very carefully and suggested holding a video conference together with them. Unfortunately, at that time the video conference was not possible.
However, Professor Sachs found the way and in May 2000 the audio conference concerning the economic problems in Georgia was held. In the conference Professor Sachs and his colleagues participated together with lecturers and students of the School of Economics and Business of Grigol Robakidze University. The students' high level of enthusiasm and responsibility towards this conference must be acknowledged here. They independently obtained all necessary information regarding the economic development in Georgia and made reports in English. In particular, David Koberidze, George Chitaishvili and Temuri Iremashvili must be singled out. The students presented a complete critical analysis of the state of economics of Georgia. The conference was so successful that the both sides agreed to hold the similar conference once more and in November 2001the second conference was held.
The theme for discussion was related to Economic Problems of Georgia. Again the participants were Professor Sachs and his colleagues and from Grigol Robakidze University students and lecturers of the School of Economics and Business. The students as well as lecturers showed very profound knowledge in the tendencies of the economic development of Georgia. The most interesting fact was that Professor Sachs and his colleagues were aware of the economic situation of Georgia.
These conferences started the new era of collaboration between the two institutions. Professor Sachs has involved the Department of Economic Sciences of Grigol Robakidze University in the International Research Project - "World Economic Forum", which considers the study and research of the tendencies of the economic development in the Post-Soviet countries.
In January 2002, Professor Andrew Warren of the above-mentioned Center visited Grigol Robakidze University. He demonstrated the methods by which the scientists of the Department of Economic Sciences can carry out research concerning the problem mentioned above. He was very impressed with Grigol Robakidze University while leaving Tbilisi.
